Comparison of methods for measuring denitrifying activity in marine-sediments from the western mediterranean coast ArchiMer
Raymond, N; Bonin, P; Bertrand, Jc.
Different types of denitrification rates in coastal marine sediments from the Western Mediterranean coast (France) were simultaneously determined by varioUS C2H2 inhibition techniques: in situ denitrifying activity in intact cores or sediment slurries; DEA (Denitrifying Enzyme Assays); and potential activity. Denitrifying activity was also estimated by the use of kinetic parameters (Km and V(max)). Values for denitrifying activities in the top two centimetres ranged from 0 to 50-mu-moles of nitrous oxide produced per litre of sediment per day, and were similar when intact core or sediment slurries were used. DEA showed comparable values for all the study sites. The potential activity ranged from 298-600-mu-moles per litre per day. Estimated activity based...

Introduction et invasion de l'algue tropicale Caulerpa taxifolia en Méditerranée nord-occidentale ArchiMer
Meinesz, A; Hesse, B.
The tropical alga Caulerpa taxifolia (Vahl) C. Agardh has been displayed over the last fifteen years in tropical aquaria at the Oceanographic Museum, Monaco. Its accidental introduction into the natural environment dates from 1984. It developed first in the sea immediately below the museum, and resisted winter temperatures of 11 to 13-degrees-C. Gradually the population spread over all types of substrate, including rock, sand and mud, and over a wide range of depth, 3 to 35 m, on this relatively exposed site. In summer 1990 we became aware of its presence both to the east and to the west of Monaco. To the east, it now occurs on the whole of the eastern side of Cap Martin (3 km from Monaco) and is spreading over the west face. To the west we have observed...

Inventaire des plantes introduites en Méditerranée : origines et répercussions sur l'environnement et les activités humaines ArchiMer
Verlaque, M.
This review addresses the problem of recently introduced plants in the Mediterranean in order to analyse their vectors, the dispersal processes and the possible ecological and economic consequences. Ninety-five cases (94 macroscopic algae and one seagrass) are listed and discussed. Three major routes of access into the Mediterranean are indicated: shipping, the Suez canal and aqua-culture. The recent introduction of Caulerpa taxifolia along our coasts has called attention to a new potential source: aquaria. Among the successful acclimatizations, cold-temperate Pacific and Atlantic species remain confined to the north of the Mediterranean (Gulf of Lions, Adriatic), whereas some tropical or sub-tropical plants colonize large areas. Some introduced algae...

Investigation of anthropogenic and natural organic inputs in estuarine sediments using hydrocarbon markers (nah, lab, pah) ArchiMer
Bouloubassi, I; Saliot, A.
Surface sediments were collected in the Rhone delta, NW Mediterranean, at two seasons and analyzed for composition of non-aromatic hydrocarbons (NAH), long-chain linear alkylbenzenes (LAB) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) by GC and GC/MS following fractionation by normal phase HPLC. Concentrations varied from 21.2 to 166.7 mu/g for NAH, from 2097.9 to 9324.2 ng/g for total PAH and from 342.5 to 2713.0 ng/g for LAB. These levels are comparable to those reported for other coastal areas worldwide in the vicinity of important urban and industrial activities. Detailed analysis permitted identification of several contributions to the bulk sedimentary hydrocarbon mixture from fossil fuel related sources, pyrolytic processes, domestic wastes as well as...

Modeling the barotropic tides in the strait of sicily and tunisian shelf ArchiMer
Molines, Jm.
In order to check the sea-level variability in the vicinity of Lampedusa Island (in the frame of Topex/Poseidon altimeter calibration), a numerical model of the tides for the Strait of Sicily and adjacent area has been performed. Cotidal and co-range charts for the main diurnal and semidiurnal constituents are drawn and the model results are compared with in situ data. Position of amphidromes for these constituents is also clarified: a strong semidiurnal resonance observed in the Gulf of Gabes is well reproduced in the model. Semidiurnal tidal currents are found to be important at the Adventure Bank (South-West of Sicily) and in the Gulf of Gabes. Diurnal tidal current, dominant on Adventure Bank, are due to energy trapped around the Western extremity of...

Structure et organisation de l'étang de Thau d'après la faune benthique (macrofaune, méiofaune). Relations avec le confinement ArchiMer
Guelorget, O; Perthuisot, Jp; Lamy, N; Lefebvre, A.
The biogeological organization of Thau lagoon was investigated through the granulometric analysis of surficial sediments and study of the qualitative and the quantitative distribution of benthic macrofauna and meiofauna. These show clearly that the lagoonal system is organized according to confinement as conceived by Guelorget and Perthuisot (1983 a; 1992), which depends upon the rate of exchanges with the open sea and the hydrodynamic pattern of the basin. The latter appears to be composed of a pair of lagoonal subsystems separated by a hydrodynamically unstable barrier. The northern subsystem displays the classical concentric organization of Mediterranean lagoons with a clearly defined hydraulic umbilicus. The southern subsystem displays a transverse...

Water-level variations in the northern levantine sea ArchiMer
Yuce, H; Alpar, B.
Characteristics of water level variations in the northern Levantine Sea have been investigated by reference to a sequence of hourly water level observations at Antalya and Iskenderun. Long and short period oscillations of non-tidal origin have been identified. Long-period oscillations (several days) correspond to variations in barometric pressure; the short-period oscillations (2.8 to 4.6 hours) can be attributed to seiche-like motions. The tidal oscillations are small in amplitude, with a spring range of 21 and 41 cm in Antalya and Iskenderun respectively. Tidal oscillations are dominated by semi-diurnal constituents. The seasonal fluctuations of monthly mean sea level show two maxima and two minima; the major minimum occurs in March and is followed by a...
